If the two numbers are identical it outputs a 1. If the difference between them is the same as the error window it outputs 0.5. it is a 1/x exponential curve, so that values from 0.5 to 1 represent ever closer inputs within the error window, and values < 0.5 represent ever more distant inputs. The second outlet gives the direction of difference (sign) from i2 to i1 so that sign=1 if i2<=i1 and sign=-1 if i2<i1. simile~ implements the simile algorithm as a dsp object. A third outlet presents an overall score for each block, which when divided by the blocksize gives an average simile value for each signal vector. framescore~ takes this process a step further, so that simile comparisons are weighted according to instantaneous signal values, and the overall weighted average is scaled to lie between 0 and 1. framescore~ may be used to compare alpha values from an rfft~ -> cartopol~ pair, and so implements a block-by-block comparison of instantaneous timbre.
