This page was made because of a discussion on pd-list. Until I get time to make a better write-up and take some nice digital pictures of the completed system, I have re-posted some preliminary info here.
[dto]?

I recently designed and built a custom, PD-centered portable performance instrument / portable studio HDR/synthesis / effectsbox/nintendo emulator, re-configurable all-purpose media-center funbox.

Can I make a page for it on your wiki?

The specs are:

  • Athlon XP 3200+ w/ 1 GB RAM, mounted in a 4-unit high rackmount PC chassis from Athena Power corporation. The case is lined internally with PAXmate? noise insulation foam.

In a year or so, I want to upgrade the CPU and mainboard to Athlon64 or even dual Opteron (if I can afford it :-)

  • Dual DVD drives (one reader, one dual-layer DVD/RW), mounted side-by-side
  • 80 GB 7200 RPM ATA/133 drive for OS (Fedora) and other files.
  • 2 x 200GB ATA/133 drives in a RAID 1 configuration, for audio/video recording and archiving, running SGI XFS filesystem
  • All 3 hard drives mounted in "Cooldrive" series cooler/muffler modules, manufactured by Cooler Master. One of them is a 4-way fan control and temperature monitor that I use to reduce system noise. I've installed Zalman CPU and GPU coolers, and also purchased a silent power supply. As a result, the PC is virtually silent, and you can record in the same room so long as you put the machine a few feet away.
  • M-Audio Delta 1010 rackmount audio interface- 8x8 analog I/O + 2x2 digital + word clock / MIDI interfaces.
  • Rackmount patch bay brings the Delta 1010's analog jacks to the front of the machine, easily accessible during a gig or in the studio. There are also front USB ports on the PC chassis.
  • Raxxess PD 800-L rackmount Power Conditioner and light.
  • All the above mounted in a SKB shock-absorbing weather-resistant portable rack case:

and it closes up with rubber seals when you want to transport it.

  • Wireless bluetooth keyboard and mouse (Logitech DiNovo?).
  • M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 (full size weighted USB-powered MIDI controller, with lots of assignable knobs, faders, etc... this keyboard is ideal for PureData?.)
  • WinTV? PVR-350 (for using the box as a video processor with GEM, and also for MythTV? etc / personal video recorder.)
  • Roland keyboard amplifier for on-the-road and ensembles of small-to-medium spaces
  • KRK 8" powered reference monitors for studio use
