Layout of the convention events

The many events the convention offered

Designing the program of the convention was sure not an easy task. This is with regard to the complex nature of the topic (pd), the "community" way of organizing things in discussions and emails and the interesting mixture of art and technology.

Since a typical day on the event would start at 9 am and possibly end after midnight, the program was split up into different locations, mainly the rooms of the coorporating organisations.

Requested Activities

  • Exhibition, installative art
  • Workshops for people learning pd and experts alike
  • Lectures and presentation of mostly technical issues
  • Concerts, party, food&drinks
  • Non-technical discussions of "philosophic" topics
  • A collective programming session lasting one afternoon, called "coding sprint"
  • A trip to the countryside

Details:

  • Exhibition, installative art

To present artwork done with pd, either from graz-based artists or international, a "call for works" was issued on July 7th 2004. The following works were shown during the week at ESC and Kunstlabor installations.

  • Workshops for people learning pd and experts alike

During three days, beginners workshops were being held at Kunstlabor, presented by Lukas Gruber and Florian Hollerweger, with about 10-20 participants each day.

Almost every convention day presented also a series of workshops from pd experts Workshop Listing

  • Lectures and presentation of mostly technical issues

The developer meeting. Usually a day would start at the morning with 4-5 hours of lectures. These were held at the IEM, and were finished with a short lunch concert. Lecture listing.

  • Concerts, party, food&drinks

Every evening was celebrated by having a dinner supplied from Teranga Restaurant, which was followed by a concert, often happening at Kunstlabor, and sometimes another concert/party at a different location. All concerts.

  • Non-technical discussions of "philosophic" topics

To let people discuss topics aside from technology, an to create a forum for the so called theoreticians (those people who were invited to the convention who were not pd users/developers, but philosopers, journalists,...) each day included an afternoon discussion in ESC. Here, the meeting between technology, art and philosophy was emphasized, dealing with topics such as: Open source, collective idea sharing,...

  • Coding sprint

Most communication between pd developers is done on the pd-mailing list, most people are working on their own, sharing ideas and perspectives via the web. To allow an effective, collaborate programming session, a "coding sprint" was organized, where small teams were working on the improvement of the pd. A final discussion was held, where the results were presented.

  • A trip to the countryside

Most of the guests did come a long way to Graz, from Spain, the US, Canada, Poland, Belarus, etc. A concluding trip to the south part of styria allowed almost 20 people to see the wonderful countryside, to switch off their computers and have a nice time.
