Content description: PID workshop will introduce physical interaction design in the activities of applied New Media works with microcontroller and sensor technologies. The workshop will point out existing interaction design practices, in processes where they adapt to physical interaction to daily life applications and contemporary art works. Arduino microcontroller and PureData environment will be used as production tools. Arduino is an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple i/o board, and a development environment for physical interaction with computing systems. The workshop will introduce artistic strategies, structures and methodologies for the creation of interactive installations, physical media - image interaction projects. The workshop will be taught using the PureData, an open source object oriented programming environment and Arduino microcontroller. PureData is a dataflow programming (visual programming) language for audio and multimedia, which has been a recent pioneering application in the contemporary art field. Arduino microcontroller (open source hardware) and PureData are free software applications to be installed and used by any purposes.

Course objectives: Physical Interaction Design workshop aims to familiarize students with New Media works where physical interaction is integrated with sound and image and also aims to make it possible for students to experience experimental interaction with sensor technologies where the data is achieved with the physical interaction of participants and processed through computer.

Key words: physical interaction design, data processing, sensors, experimental media art, microcontroller, Pure Data, dataflow programming language, experimental interaction, Arduino.
